A man grieving the loss of his mother, says he is disappointed the man responsible for the fatal car crash was given an opportunity and blew it.

Darrell Prokopie spoke to paNOW Tuesday afternoon on the steps of Court of King’s Bench in Prince Albert.

Just minutes prior, in one of the building’s smaller courtrooms, 24-year-old Bernard McCallum appeared by video. It’s been exactly one week since he received a community-based sentence for the crash in June, 2024 that resulted in the death over a week later of 83-year-old Iris Prokopie.

Last weekend McCallum was re-arrested for breaching his 24-hour curfew.

As per discussion heard in court, he was remanded to April 7 when lawyers will either set a date for a bail hearing or a hearing to discuss the breach. The Crown may argue for termination of the CSO and for McCallum to serve the rest of his 18-month sentence in jail.

“I’m upset you know, not only with the system, but you know, with him obviously,” Prokopie said referring to McCallum, adding he was fine with the idea of a young man receiving a community-based sentence for his crime.

“I kind of thought, you know being a young fellow, he maybe deserved that second chance but he’s had that, and you know now I think it’s time to treat him like a big boy, and have some real repercussions.”

Crown Prosecutor Maureen Longworth stated she was opposed to McCallum’s release.

No members of McCallum’s family were present in the courtroom.
