Saskatoon murder victim identified as man from Mistawasis

Charlene Pechawis said her son was respectful to everyone he met and did not deserve what he got.

Darcy Pechawis, 49, was murdered in Saskatoon on March 14. 

According to a statement from Saskatoon police, around 12:30 a.m., officers were called to the 900 Block of 22nd Street West. Pechawis was found suffering from a gunshot wound and was transported to hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.

Charlene told paNOW, as a result of his home being destroyed by a fire, her son was residing at the Salvation Army in Saskatoon. She said she spoke to him about an hour before the shooting.

“He was short for cigarettes for him and his cousin, and I told him not to go anywhere because the night before he got stabbed outside when he was having a smoke outside Salvation Army…seven times in the arms,” she said.

The morning after the shooting, police officers visited Charlene’s home and informed her what happened. She recalled asking her son to come home during the last conversation she had with him.

“He said, ‘Don’t worry about me mom, I’ll be okay.’ He said ‘I’ll come home tomorrow, I love you’. That was our last call,” she said.

The funeral was held at Mistawasis First Nation, located 70 kilometres west of Prince Albert, on March 19.

Acknowledging her son had previously spent some time in prison, Charlene said he had not been in any sort of trouble for over 20 years and was not involved with any gangs.

A 17-year-old boy has since been charged with second-degree murder, use of a firearm while committing an indictable offence, and possession of a firearm while prohibited. The case returns to Saskatoon Provincial Court on April 2.

Charlene said she does not have any details about what happened.

She said Darcy was looking forward to his son’s 20th birthday, which is coming up at the end of the month.

“He did everything for his son.”
