Prince Albert Performance Cheer team wins first at provincials

Despite only being around for five years, the U18 Pom/Hip Hop/ Dance team at the Prince Albert Dance Company have two provincial championships.

The most recent award occurred last weekend in Saskatoon. Studio Owner Bethany Leachman was very proud of the accomplishment. She stated they also finished first in their inaugural year, but now include an entirely new group of kids and a new coach.

“It was really exciting for them”, she said.

The five person team practices once a week and competes against other teams from larger centres who practice two to three times a week.

“They were ecstatic. They also won an all-star champion centre at a previous competition this year, so they’ve had a really good running this season,” Leachman said.

Sadly the team’s coach Jessica Parenteau is leaving after this season to attend medical school. Leachman confirmed going forward they’ve decided to completely revamp their program.

“Next year we’re taking a step back, and we’re only doing training. We’re also starting up a cheer program with some U8s and U6s,” she said.

Leachman added the following year they aim to have some of their athletes compete locally around Saskatchewan, and possibly also Las Vegas or somewhere in B.C.

Also competing in Saskatoon was the PACE All Star Cheerleading Team and they came away with a number of group and individual awards.
