The Saskatchewan Rivers Public School Division (SRPSD) is welcoming provincial funding that will support a new replacement school in Shellbrook and a major renovation project at Christopher Lake School.

The 2026 provincial budget includes $123.8 million for school capital with funding for three new schools, including one for Shellbrook to consolidate and replace the existing elementary and high schools.

A project at Christopher Lake to demolish and rebuild a portion of the school will be paid for in part by the $18.5 million allotted for new minor capital renewal projects.

Saskatchewan Rivers Board Chair Cher Bloom said these significant investments will enhance learning environments for students and staff, while supporting the long-term sustainability of schools in both communities.

“Our Board has consistently advocated for safe, modern, and engaging learning spaces. These projects reflect a shared commitment to ensuring rural students have access to high-quality educational facilities close to home,” she said.

Bloom explained the new school in Shellbrook will provide a modern, purpose-built learning environment designed to meet the needs of today’s learners, while the renovation at Christopher Lake School will revitalize and enhance existing spaces to better support student success.

“These investments go far beyond bricks and mortar. They represent an investment in student success, well-being, and belonging. Modern learning environments allow us to better support innovative teaching practices, create inclusive spaces, and ensure every learner has the opportunity to thrive.”

Acknowledging their partnership with the provincial government, Bloom said the SRPSD appreciates the Government of Saskatchewan’s commitment to supporting education in rural communities.

She added further details regarding timelines and next steps will be shared as they become available.
