Local high schools vying for spot in HOOPLA at regionals this weekend
Carlton and St. Mary’s boys and girls basketball teams are hitting the road this weekend as they look to punch their tickets to provincials in the 5A regional tournaments.
The boys are highlighted by both Prince Albert high schools as Carlton ranks first and St. Mary ranks second. Heading down to Swift Current, the school’s rankings helped them earns byes into the second round of the tournament, where Carlton will play the winner of #8 Estevan and #9 Warman and St. Mary will face either #7 Yorkton Regional or #10 A.E. Peacock from Moose Jaw.
Throughout the season, Carlton led all 5A rural boys teams in the province with a dominant 25-7 record, the only team to surpass the 20-win mark. The Crusaders competed in, and won, tournaments throughout the Prairies, highlighted by a seven-game win streak heading into the regional tournament.
Meanwhile, St. Mary was a close second with a 19-8 record. The Marauders were hot out of the gate going 8-2 in their first 10 games and continued that dominance toward the end of the season as they head to Swift Current on a 7-3 run, with two of those three losses coming against Carlton while the other was against Bethlehem from Saskatoon.
