Huber’s overtime goal gives Boston Fleet 4-3 win over Montreal Victoire

LAVAL — Ella Huber scored 1:33 into overtime as the Boston Fleet beat the Montreal Victoire 4-3 in a first-place showdown in Professional Women’s Hockey League action at Place Bell on Sunday afternoon.

With the overtime win, Boston (9-5-2-3) remained in first place three points ahead of Montreal (9-4-1-5). The Fleet completed a comeback after entering the third period down 3-0.

Loren Gabel scored her first goal of the season, while Megan Keller and Susanna Tapani had the others. Keller added two assists while Alina Muller also had two assists. Aerin Frankel made 27 saves.

Abby Roque had a goal and two assists for Montreal. Marie-Philip Poulin scored the opener for the home team but left the game a few minutes later.

Kati Tabin also scored for the Victoire while Ann-Renee Desbiens made 22 saves.

Poulin put Montreal into the lead with 5:10 remaining in the first period, tipping Gosling’s shot on the game’s first power play. Then, two minutes later, Poulin seemed to reinjure her right knee and came off in the middle of the play.

She was replaced by Tabin, who fired a one-timer past Frankel off a Gosling pass to double Montreal’s lead.

The two power play goals came 2:10 apart.

Boston had an early power play in the second and used it to generate some momentum. But after opening the period with a 6-1 shot advantage, the Victoire took control, outshooting the Fleet 10-0 in the final 10:16 of the middle frame.

They also had the period’s only goal, with Roque scoring with 3:02 left in the period.

The Fleet got on the board 6:01 into the third period with Gabel’s goal. It was initially waved off for goaltender interference but was overturned on review.

Boston got another chance to cut the lead after a five-minute major penalty to Maggie Flaherty. The Fleet had five shots, but did not score.

Despite not scoring on the advantage, Keller made the game 3-2 with 2:34 remaining on a slapshot from the point, and Frankel on the bench for the extra attacker. They tied the game with 14.8 seconds remaining when Tapani’s shot beat Desbiens.
