Trade mission pushes pork in Mexico

Mar 11, 2026 | 3:00 PM

A Team Canada trade mission focused on the significance of Mexico to this country’s pork industry.

The trip last month brought together federal and industry leaders to reinforce economic cooperation for the important export market. Mexico is currently the third largest export market for Canadian pork products, with exports increasing by more than 20 per cent in 2025.

According to Canadian Pork Council (CPC) Chair René Roy, the evolving global trade environment means that federal trade missions are essential for reinforcing stable market access and advancing the interests of Canadian pork producers.

Roy said industry leaders, including minister responsible for Canada-U.S. Trade, Intergovernmental Affairs, and One Canadian Economy Dominic LeBlanc, and Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food Heath MacDonald demonstrated Canada’s commitment to the Mexican market.

“We are working with partners to continue to diversify our markets, and this was an important trade mission to help us continue that effort,” Roy said.

During the visit, CPC also met with partners from OPORMEX, the Mexican pork producers association, to discuss priority areas like innovation, biosecurity, and the CUSMA review process.

CPC also participated in a roundtable alongside the Canadian Meat Council and Canada Pork to present the “Verified Canadian Pork” brand, which highlights Canada’s high standards in food safety, animal care, and traceability.

CPC is the national voice for pork producers in Canada which is a federation of nine provincial pork organizations representing 7,000 farms and serves its membership through national and international advocacy efforts as well as the development of food safety, animal care and health, traceability, environment and sustainability, international trade and nutrition.
