The sudden passing this month of Tanya Roberts at Montreal Lake Cree Nation (MLCN), has caused her closest friends a great deal of pain as they struggle to come terms with the fact someone hurt a woman known for her kindness towards others.

In the early morning hours of March 1, the 31-year-old died at a home on the northern reserve. RCMP have since determined the death to be a homicide and continue to investigate.

Dana Henderson had been with Roberts just hours prior.

“My boyfriend actually called me in the middle of the night and told me and I was in disbelief like it wasn’t real,” she said.

At the time her death, Roberts was living at a group home in Prince Albert but wanted to return to MLCN and spend time with her family. Henderson said Roberts did not mention any problems or concerns about her safety. She added Roberts had a bubbly personality.

“There was no time when she’d be sad. When you came around her, she’d either tell you a funny story or she’d definitely tell you about her day and it was just always a happy one.”

Roberts and Henderson met when they were young and lived at Ranch Ehrlo. At this stage of the police investigation, there’s been no arrests. Henderson hopes someone with information will come forward.

“Or even just to say something to somebody so they can say something because the family really needs to know and they really need closure,” Henderson said.

Melissa Halkett was another close friend and recalled how Tanya loved to sing and dance and was the kind of friend everyone loved to be around.

“Whenever I was having a bad day, she would do silly stuff to make me laugh,” she said. “When I’d need someone to talk to, she’d say she’s just a phone call or text away.”
