Two charged after Prince Albert carjacking

Two people have been charged in relation to a chain of events in Prince Albert that began with a car jacking and ended with a heavy police presence in the city’s East Flat area.

Accused Justice Kadachuk and Jasmine Beatty appeared Friday morning in provincial court and were remanded to Monday for possible bail hearings. Each have been accused of robbery and possession of stolen property exceeding $5,000.

At approximately 1:40 p.m., police were called to the 2600 block of second Ave. W. for a report of a vehicle that had been stolen at gunpoint.

Arriving officers learned four people were allegedly taking a ride share when one of them brandished a firearm and told the driver to exit the vehicle.

Through initial investigation, police were able to track the vehicle as it drove through the city before it was disabled on Kemp Crescent. Shortly after, another officer located one of the suspects in the unit block of Bowerman Crescent where he was arrested without further incident.

The Prince Albert Police Service Emergency Response Team (ERT) attended Kemp Crescent to assist and a man and a woman were subsequently arrested without further incident.

A search of the stolen vehicle and involved residence on Kemp Crescent did not result in police locating any items of evidentiary value.

Members of Patrol, Crime Reduction Team (CRT), Emergency Response Team (ERT), Proactive Policing Unit (PPU), Canine Unit, and Combined Traffic Services Saskatchewan (CTSS) assisted in this investigation, along with the Saskatchewan RCMP Emergency Response Team and Saskatchewan Marshals Service.

Shortly after 4:30 p.m., police advised of heavy police presence in the area of Kemp Cres. and roughly three hours later, the advisory was lifted.

Police comment on ride sharing

Thursday’s incident brings attention to the safety concerns related to ride sharing.

As recently as March 15, a person was robbed at gunpoint. Back in January, 2021, a man was shot in the back and robbed of his vehicle.

The Prince Albert Police Service is advising members of the public to use precautions when utilizing any social media informal ride sharing service.

“These services are often found on Facebook and individuals seeking a ride are connected with someone willing to provide one.,” they said.

Below are some safety precautions:

 –              Be sure you know and trust the individual who is providing a ride

–              Let someone know where you are, when you are leaving, and expected arrival time. Consider proving information about the vehicle such as make, model, colour and license plate.

–              If at any point something feels off, trust your instincts and find an alternative way of travel.

“It is important to note that these types of services are informal arrangement and not connected to commercial rideshare services.”
