Rural Municipality of Buckland elects first female reeve

Mar 5, 2026 | 3:47 PM

History has been made in the Rural Municipality of Buckland.

Linda Clavelle has been elected the first female Reeve, and it comes just days before International Women’s Day.

“The whole idea behind International Women’s Day is to focus on what women can do, and my dad always said do what you can with what you’ve got, where you are,” she said.

A total of 501 residents participated in Wednesday’s byelection, and Clavelle received 320 votes.

Clavelle previously served on council from 2011 to 2014, and said she was humbled by the amount of support she received. One of her priority goals going forward is to create a strategic plan.

“If you don’t have a plan, how do you know where you’re going, how do you decide which infrastructure project wins over the other infrastructure project?,” she said.

“And I think the best way to get a plan is to talk to people and see what they want, how they envision things because we have to design our own future, we can’t react to everything that comes along.”

In the lead-up to the election, Clavelle confirmed she heard lots of concerns around the condition of the RM’s infrastructure, roads in particular, and overall safety.

According to a statement provided by Chief Administrative Officer Cori Sarginson, Clavelle will represent the municipality with dedication and integrity.

“Clavelle’s election marks an important milestone for the RM of Buckland, reflecting the growing role of women in municipal leadership and decision making.”

Clavelle will be sworn in during Monday’s RM council meeting.
