Prince Albert police report spike in vehicle thefts

Feb 26, 2026 | 11:36 AM

Following a recent spike in vehicle thefts, the Prince Albert Police Service is reminding residents that idling cars are easy targets for opportunistic criminals.

In January 2026, there were 41 reported vehicle thefts, which is 16 more than the same time last year.

In 2025, there were 417 vehicle thefts, which is a 29 per cent increase from the previous year, and 122 of those vehicle thefts occurred in the fourth quarter.

Prince Albert Police Service Public Relations and Media Lead Easton Hamm said vehicle thefts often increase when the temperatures drop.

“In many cases, car keys or a fob may have been left inside the vehicle at the time of the theft,” he said.

According to a discussion heard Thursday morning at provincial court, a vehicle reported stolen to police was later pulled over, and there were a number of guns found inside.

Hamm said the Prince Albert Police Service is currently taking a further analytical dive into vehicle thefts and looking at whether or not the vehicles are being used in other criminal activity.

“At the next Board of Police Commissioners meeting in April, we will be reporting on 2025 year-end statistics in relation to fail-to-stop incidents, which will provide members of the public and the media further insight into what we experienced the previous year,” Hamm said.

“As we continue to see an increased number of vehicle thefts, the Prince Albert Police Service is currently exploring an initiative to address vehicle thefts and incidents of failure to stop.”

According to information provided by SGI, between 2020 to 2025, there were about 3,072 vehicle theft claims made in Saskatchewan.
