Northern Bears close out regular season with eight wins in last 10 games

Feb 25, 2026 | 1:25 PM

The Mann-Northway Northern Bears wrapped up the regular season on the road on Tuesday.

Prince Albert made the trek down Highway 11 for a weekday date with Saskatoon, which saw the Stars prevail in a narrow 3-2 contest.

Saskatoon opened the scoring in the second period with three straight goals, a lead which they carried into the third. There, PA broke the goose egg with a powerplay tally from Andie Marshall at the 5:50 mark, quickly followed by a marker from Lakeland College commit Aidyn Konechny less than two minutes later to make it a one-goal game. However, with only four minutes left on the clock, Saskatoon managed to defuse any further comeback attempts as the Bears fell short.

Despite the loss, the Black and Orange ended the regular season schedule with eight wins in their final 10 games. Head coach Steve Young said things are clicking amongst the girls.

“I think the biggest thing is just their confidence and working together as a team. We’ve stressed all year that as a hockey club and as a team, the stronger we get, the more success we’re going to have, and it seemed to come together in that little span. We know what we can do now and we want to make sure we continue that in the playoffs.”

The recent success has seen the Bears defeat both Notre Dame and Saskatoon across their eight wins, with five coming against the Hounds and three against the Stars dating back to Jan. 24.

Following Tuesday’s game, the standings in the Sask. Female U18 AAA Hockey League (SFU18AAAHL) sees Prince Albert end in fifth, one point behind Saskatoon. The Stars have two games left to play but since they can’t move up any further in the standings, it will be Saskatoon and P.A. in the opening round of playoffs.

“It’ll be no different than any Saskatoon/PA rivalry, I think there’s a rivalry no matter what,” continued Young. “I think the players know and understand that situation, so we have to be ready to play. But it’s playoff time and any time it’s playoff time, teams are excited, and we’re excited to get at it.”

The Bears have seen production on all levels this season as 10 players have scored more than 10 points, the first that’s happened since the 2021-22 season when 11 players scored at least 10 points. They’re led by Jersie Andersen with 17G-20A-37P, followed by Andie Marshall with 10G-19A-29P and Londyn Hoffman at 7G-14A-21P.

When asked about the depth scoring this season, Young said it’s been a full team effort.

“I think on any given night, we had players that put pucks in the net that we weren’t relying on our number one or two players. At the same time, I thought our top players definitely pushed the pace and created opportunities for everyone else. So, it has become a team game like that. Secondary scoring is going to be important in playoffs.”

A playoff schedule has yet to be announced and will be finalized next week.
