Raiders inch closer to East Division Title with win in Moose Jaw

After beating the Moose Jaw Warriors on Monday Family Day matinee, the Prince Albert Raiders travelled to Moose Jaw Friday for the rematch. The Raiders had their foot on the pedal al game long and came away with a 6-2 win.

Note: in the Weekend Preview article from Friday morning, it was stated that the Raiders could clinch the division with a win Friday night. That took the wrong tiebraking method into account

It took all the way until the final two minutes for the Raiders to score, but they still found the net twice in the first. At the 18:06 mark, Max Heise his man up on a faceoff and Maddix McCagherty came in from the right wing to take the puck, then quickly passed back to the right point for Daxon Rudolph. MacCagherty then crashed the slot as Rudolph skated down the right wall until he found the passing lane, and McCagherty quickly buried the shot for his 16th of the year.

Then at the 19:57 mark, Brandon Gorzynski scored on an unassisted effort. First he made a great check on the right wall, then stole the puck and skated to the slot where he would rip his 26th of the season.

The Warriors got the first strike of the second period. After getting the puck from his defence, Riley Thorpe would streak down the left side and get just enough room behind the Raiders defence to tuck in the backhand at 4:29.

Just 50 seconds later, and the Raiders restored their two goal lead. Again on a faceoff, Braeden Cootes won it back for a onetimer from Alisher Sarkenov. He fanned on the shot, but the puck moved forward to Cootes who had his shot blocked, but the puck continued to travel forward until Ben Harvey found it and tucked in it off the goaltender for his eighth of the season.

After 2: Raiders 3 – 1 Warriors, shots 14-7 Raiders, 32-13 Raiders

At the 7:23 mark, the Raiders would score again. Justice Christensen would send a pass to Daxon Rudolph on the left wall in their own zone (even though Linden Burrett was credited for the assist), and Rudolph would rush a pass across the ice for Alisher Sarkenov streaking up the right. Sarkenov beat the defenders and cut in on his forehand before firing his 17th of the season.

After that, the Warriors would score shorthanded. Ethan Semeniuk was credited with an unassisted tally after stealing the puck at his own blue line and carryign the puck into the Raiders zone on a fairly safe looking rush, but Semeniuk curled and fired a shot around a defenceman found the crossbar and in at 11:02.

It was after the Warriors scored that Steele Bass had his best save of the night. The Warriors brought the puck in on a 3-on-1 after a turnover at centre, and a onetimer feed for Pavel McKenzie forced Bass to kick from his right towards his left, fully extend the glove out, and snap the puck out of the air for a highlight reel save.

At the 18:47 mark, the Warriors had their net empty and Braeden Cootes would skate the puck out of the Raiders zone to find the empty net for his 20th of the year.

Then to add an exclamation point with 14 seconds left, Riley Boychuk and Brock Cripps both picked up assists when Hubert Clarke fired a wrist shot from the point, and it snuck through for Clarke’s first WHL goal at 19:46.

FINAL: Raiders 6 – 2 Warriors, shots 17-12 Raiders, 49-25 Raiders overall

With the goal from Clarke, every Raider on the roster now has at least one goal this season.

16-year-old forward Ben Harvey now has a goal in each of the last three games for the Raiders since moving to the line with Alisher Sarkenov and Braeden Cootes.

The Raiders now just need a single point to secure the East Division title for a second straight year. The Raiders will return home and host the Swift Current Broncos Saturday night.
