Breakfast beers to cheer on Team Canada in Olympic hockey gold medal match

At least one local business will be taking advantage of the early morning Olympic mayhem expected when Team Canada goes for gold this weekend.

The bar at the Canadian Brewhouse, located in The Yard District, will open at 7 a.m. Sunday. A post on the restaurant’s social media page said, “We’re opening early so you don’t have to miss a single second of the action. Let’s make it a morning to remember.”

A limited menu will be offered until 11 a.m. Sunday. The business was already packed on Friday afternoon when Canada defeated Finland in a nail-biting 3-2 semi-final victory to advance to the gold medal game.

At least one other restaurant paNOW reached out to said it was considering opening early as well, but no decision had been made by the time of publication.

The province announced earlier this month that bars and restaurants could request to extend their hours of alcohol service in order to allow customers to cheer on Team Canada at the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics. The Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority (SLGA) said it would consider requests from permittees to open their establishment for the sale of alcohol as early as 5 a.m. Regular hours for liquor service are 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 a.m.

Minister Responsible for SLGA Warren Kaeding previously said the requests were being considered because of the time difference between Italy and Saskatchewan; some events start early in the morning.

“Saskatchewan loves the Olympics and businesses have an additional option for customers that want to come together and cheer on Team Canada,” he said.

Canada will play the United States in the gold medal game. Puck drop for the championship match will be Sunday at 7:10 a.m. Saskatchewan time.

This will be the first time Canada has played for Olympic men’s hockey gold since Sochi 2014, a game that saw the Canadians defeat Sweden 3-0. The Sochi tournament was the last Olympic Games to feature National Hockey League players until this year.
