New judge

New provincial court judge appointed in Prince Albert

Attendees at Provincial Court in Prince Albert will soon see a new face on the bench.  

Crown Prosecutor Curtis Wiebe, who was in Swift Current, has on occasion practiced in Prince Albert already.  

Wiebe graduated from the College of Law at the University of Saskatchewan in 2002 and articled with Richard Gibbons in North Battleford before being called to the bar in 2004.  

From there, he worked for Legal Aid as a staff lawyer for two years and then joined Kanuka Thuringer LLP in Regina.  

His six years there focused on civil litigation, family law and criminal law and took him to the position of partner.

He was also active with the Saskatchewan Trial Lawyer’s Association.  

In 2012, Wiebe moved into Public Prosecutions and became a Crown prosecutor, working his way up to regional Crown prosecutor.  

He has also appeared in the Court of King’s Bench and the Court of Appeal.  

While not working, Wiebe coaches school basketball and minor league football and did court tours for school groups in southwest Saskatchewan. He is active in his church and is an amateur sheep herder.  

Two other judges were appointed at the same time in other parts of the province.  

Sara Knowles will sit on the bench in Saskatoon Provincial Court and Matthew Schmeling will do the same but in Regina.
