Archive Week aims to honour and promote provincial heritage

Feb 1, 2026 | 8:00 AM

Events are planned across the province throughout next week as the Saskatchewan Council for Archives and Archivists (SCAA) gears up for their annual Archive Week.

Celebrated each year during the first full week of February, the SCAA first introduced Archive Week in 2006. In the past, it has included events like phone-in shows over the radio, celebrity readings, open houses, and screenings of archives from across Saskatchewan.

2026 marks the 25th anniversary of the SCAA. Executive Director Gloria Bearss explained the goal of the celebration, aiming to honour the provinces heritage and promote archival institutions.

“We love to showcase all the innovative and creative ways that our members incorporate archives into the daily lives of their communities, and it has become a celebration of their dedication and successes,” she said via email. “This was a union that brought together archivists, institutions, and advocates with a shared commitment to preserving and making Saskatchewan’s documentary heritage accessible.”

For this year’s festivities, events are planned from as far north as La Ronge to as far south as Climax, which is less than 15 minutes from the U.S. border. La Ronge’s event will include set displays and photographs of historical events and figures from the area, while Climax will put on a picture night that highlights the changes of buildings, businesses, and street views over its history.

“There are many events going on all over the province, from film nights, photo and art exhibits, displays, open houses, speakers and workshops.”

Other communities hosting events include:

  • Humboldt (District Museum) – showcasing some of the City’s most important milestones, anniversaries, and achievements through a selection of photos
  • Melfort (District Museum) – Coffee & Conversation featuring 1950 home videos from Jack Deck’s personal collection
  • Saint Isidore-de-Bellevue – a physical and digital display featuring photos and documents relating to gatherings in the region over the last 100 years
  • North Battleford (North Battleford Co-op Mall) – a public exhibit emphasizing “The Educational Roots in North Battleford”
  • Lloydminster (Museum + Archives) – Lunch & Learn event featuring a presentation from Christine Charmbury titled “How to Research Métis Ancestors: Finding Historical Sources for Métis Genealogy”
  • Shaunavon (Grand Coteau Heritage & Cultural Centre) – celebrating the 100th birthday of the Shaunavon Senior Badgers Hockey Team
  • Saskatoon (Heritage Festival) – exhibits celebrating the area’s civic, natural, cultural, and artistic heritage
  • Regina (x2) – Dr. John Archer Library & Archives: opening of the Frank Laubach exhibit, featuring live musical scores from his personal music collection; Provincial Archives of Saskatchewan: launching a brand-new exhibit showcasing the unique Art & Artists of Saskatchewan project that was conducted in 1973

Bearss said she loves the events that engage all ages, adding the most important learners are the youth.

“It is so important that the children and youth are encouraged to become interested in all the past stories and tellings that archives can provide. But it’s not only about the past – these young people will also be the stewards of the future and it’s important that they understand who they are, where they came from, and how life has changed… and will continue to change for the better. It is so crucial that these collective memories are safeguarded, preserved, and made available for future generations.”

She encourages people of all ages to visit their local archives as you never know what sort of historical discoveries you’ll make.

Archives Week will get underway on Feb. 1 and will wrap up a week later on Feb. 7. An interactive map of all the communities hosting events can be found by clicking here.
