Officials confirm Maidstone moose ‘Elliott’ did not survive rescue attempt

Conservation officers report Maidstone’s community moose did not survive attempted relocation due to pre-existing poor health conditions.

Town residents spent the weekend documenting the moose named Elliott’s adventures; but worry quickly rose as the calf showed increasing signs of weakness. Local conservation officers were called for assistance in relocating the moose.

On Monday, officers attempted to perform chemical immobilization and relocation. However, due to its poor health conditions, the calf did not survive the process.

The Ministry of Community Safety explained, cow moose typically stay closely bonded with their calves for the entire first year of life. With this information, officers believe the calf was not separated from its mother, rather the mother was likely deceased.

While Elliott’s time in Maidstone was short, residents were able to capture many of its adventures; from visiting the local rink to taking naps on residents’ doorsteps.

The public is reminded that if an encounter with wildlife occurs, you should remain calm, keep your distance, make noise, and never approach or feed the animal. Moose are specifically large and unpredictable; authorities should be contacted if one is located in an urban area.
