Guilty verdict in Deschambault Lake youth murder case

Jan 28, 2026 | 3:00 PM

A man charged after a teenage boy was stabbed and killed in a northern Saskatchewan community, has been found guilty of second degree murder.

Tristan Custer’s case was discussed Tuesday at Court of King’s Bench in Melfort. The decision from Justice Gerecke followed a three day trial that was held last month.

Sentencing arguments have been scheduled for Friday morning.

On Oct. 1, 2023, RCMP received a report of an injured person on a street in Deschambault Lake. When they arrived on the scene, they found 17-year-old Calan Custer deceased.

That same day, officers arrested a female youth, who can’t be named, and charged her with second-degree murder. Custer was arrested roughly two weeks later.

According to testimony heard during trial, Calan was stabbed fives times. Calan and his girlfriend were walking home when they encountered Tristan on the street.

While they share the same last name, Tristan and Calan are not related.

The female youth was sentenced in October, 2024 and after entering a guilty plea to assault, received one year probation.
