Female hockey takes over Prince Albert as Foxes host largest annual tournament to date

Jan 8, 2026 | 4:00 PM

Rinks and arenas throughout Prince Albert will be busy all weekend as the Foxes are set to host their 25th annual hockey tournament.

This year’s installment is the largest one in the female hockey group’s history; the city will welcome 74 teams, 1,200 athletes, and 300 coaches across 10 divisions from U9 to U18. According to co-chair of the event, Taryn Svenson, the size of the tournament has reached its limit.

“We keep growing it a little bit more every year, and we’re at the point where we’re probably at capacity with hotels and the number of referees you can get, and the ability to fit all these games over a three-day weekend. We have them booked in Prince Albert and surrounding area to make this happen.”

Games begin on Friday with champions being crowned on Sunday. Before that, a banquet is planned at the Exhibition Centre to help kick off the 25th anniversary celebration. Following dinner, two long-time volunteers in Luc Robin and Jim Flynn will be honoured for their work in founding the tournament and keeping it going.

“They’ve just never stopped, they’ve never walked away. Our program wouldn’t be possible [without] dedicated volunteers in our community. They’re involved in a lot more than just hockey, and they’re a big piece for us.”

To cap off the night, Hockey Hall of Famer and current Sportsnet broadcaster Jennifer Botterill will take over the mic as the special guest speaker.

“One of our committee members had seen Jennifer speak to a bunch of young ladies in the past, and she said it was just so inspiring and emotional and because she’s a female hockey player, she’s seen the highs and lows. Our whole committee and the girls are very pumped for her to come in and see what impact she can have for all our female athletes.”

Teams are descending on Prince Albert from all corners of the province, with some coming from over the borders, including from as far as Calgary, St. Albert, and The Pas.
