Carlton has eyes on the prize as team heads to BRIT

The Carlton Crusaders Sr. Boys basketball team is making the trek to the Bridge City this week as they get set to compete in one of Western Canada’s most prestigious high school tournaments.

The Cru was invited to the 56th annual Bedford Road Invitational Tournament (BRIT), beginning on Thursday and running until Saturday at Bedford Road Collegiate in Saskatoon. The tournament was founded in 1968 and has featured teams from across the prairies, the country, and even the world.

Carlton was most recently in the tournament just a few years ago in 2023, where the Crusaders went 1-2. Their lone victory came in their final game against Regina’s Martin Collegiate; Raymond High School from Alberta ended as the champions.

Now, the team will kick off their run at BRIT 56 against Magrath High School on Friday evening at 6:30 p.m. in the Kelly Bowers Gymnasium. The Zeniths were in last year’s tournament, where they finished fifth with a 2-1 record.

Also joining Carlton this year, alongside Magrath and the host’s Bedford Road, will be Saskatoon’s Holy Cross, St. Joseph, and Walter Murray, Regina’s Martin Collegiate, Winnipeg’s Maples and Dakota Collegiates, Sir Winston Churchill High School from Calgary, Carson Graham Secondary from North Vancouver, and Collingwood School from West Vancouver.

BRIT will be the fourth tournament that Carlton has competed in this season, after also playing in the A.E. Peacock Sr. Boys tournament in Moose Jaw, the Guardian Invitational in Saskatoon, and their own Carlton Invitational at the start of the season. Throughout their games this season, the Cru has a dominant record of 9-3 with a victory at their own tournament, as well as an undefeated performance in Moose Jaw.

Leading the Red and Gold on the court this season are Grade 12 seniors Clarence Ermine, Zane Litzenberger, Colton Golding, Draco Pamaran, and Everett Moccasin-Bourke. Caleb Klassen, Tucker Prodaehl, and Landon Stonestand are Carlton’s Grade 11’s, while Mason Wilson, Josh Climenhaga, and Jacob Sawatzky round out the Cru as the rookie Grade 10’s.

The 56th annual Bedford Road Invitational Tournament gets underway on Thursday afternoon between Bedford Road and Dakota Collegiate. Following BRIT 56, Carlton is right back on the court next weekend, competing in Estevan’s annual high school basketball tournament.
