Raiders continue to score big in big win over Pats

In the three games leading up to hosting the Regina Pats on Friday, the Prince Albert Raiders had scored over seven goals a game. To start the weekend home and home, the Raiders put up their biggest score yet with a 9-2 dismantling of the Pats.

Surprisingly from how the score ended, the Pats were the ones who came out strong, earning a powerplay and scoring the first goal less than five minutes in. At the 6:26 mark, the Pats found a seem from the left point to the right side faceoff circle, and that opened a lane for Zach Lansard to feed Zach Moore in the slot, and Moore’s onetimer had just enough on it to sneak past Dimitri Fortin for Regina’s only lead of the game.

It took the Raiders 1:40 to respond, and the play started with Jonah Sivertson cycling the puck at the left point. He sent the puck to Daxon Rudolph on the right side, and he made a nice move down the right side before sending a pass to the middle for Maddix McCagherty. His shot found it’s way through for his first goal in the Art Hauser centre, and McCagherty’s 11th goal of the season at 6:06.

The Raiders then took the lead at the 7:22 mark thanks to their patented forecheck. Benett Kelly dumped the puck into the zone, and Ethan Bibeau went in to the zone on the forecheck and tied the puck up on the wall. Owen Corkish came in with a check that freed up room for Bibeau to escape below the goal line, and Bibeau found Corkish back in the slot for the tip and into the back of the net for Corkish’s eighth of the year.

After that, the Raiders red hot powerplay got their chance to contribute. At the 10:48 mark, Daxon Rudolph picked up a second assist on the night when he worked the puck down the left wall to Max Heise on the hashmarks, and Heise then found Aiden Oiring who tipped it in for his 16th of the season.

On the Raiders second powerplay, they were building momentum towards the dying moments of the powerplay, but the penalty ended just one second before the powerplay ended. Jonah Sivertson got his second assist of the net from behind the net when he found Riley Boychuk to the right of the slot. Boychuk then sent his pass to the left and Brayden Dube ripped a onetimer for his 13th of the year at 16:44.

After 1: Raiders 4 – 1 Pats, shots 14-9 Raiders

The second period was a much quicker period with way less faceoffs, but much tighter defensively. The Raiders gave up two powerplays but managed to hold the Pats off the board, and the Raiders had two powerplays. The first one on the Raiders unsuccessful, but their second one was a little more eventful.

At the 17:45 mark, the pressure from the Pats Jace Egland at the Raider blueline gave Egland a breakaway, and he made a great move to tuck the puck around the outstretched pad of the goaltender and give the Pats a shorthanded goal.

Just 1:01 later, the Raiders powerplay struck right back. At the 18:41 mark, Jonah Sivertson picked up his third assist of the night when he cut into the offensive zone from the middle towards his right, then dropped the puck back to the middle for Riley Boychuk. He then passed it left for Brayden Dube, and Dube walked down the wall towards the goal before firing a wrist shot fivehole for his second of the night and 13th of the season.

After 2: Raiders 5 – 2 Pats, shots 8-5 Pats, 19-17 Raiders overall

If they hadn’t already, the Raiders ran away with the game in the third when they started scoring again at 3:55. Jonah Sivertson got a breakaway in his first shift of the period, but he was stopped when he tried a wrist shot. On Sivertson’s second shift, he forced a turnover at his own blueline, then raced down the middle and went with a deke this time instead for his fourth point of the night and 13th goal of the season.

Over the halfway mark of the period, the Raiders scored three goals in the span of 1:42. First Benett Kelly sent the puck ahead for Brandon Gorzynski on the left side of centre. Gorzynski made a great pass down the right wall to Max Heise, and he fired a great wrist shot for his 16th of the season at 9:19.

At 10:38, Owen Corkish in the corner found Maddix McCagherty back at the left blueline. McCagherty battled hard to hold on to the puck towards the middle of the blueline, then found Justice Christensen down the right wall. Christensen found the same spot Heise had just scored from, and fired a wrist shot for his 10th of the season.

Then at 11:01, the Raiders scored their final goal of the night. After a scrum for the loose puck in the middle of the slot, Riley Boychuk found the loose puck and walked in with an open look at the net. After a stare down with the goaltender, Boychuk fired his eighth of the season fivehole to give the Raiders their biggest offensive night of the year.

FINAL: Raiders 9 – 2 Pats, shots 16-8 Raiders, 35-25 Raiders overall

The Raiders entered the game with 11 players having goals in consecutive games, and nine of those streaks continue on after the win. In the last four games, the Raiders have now averaged eight goals a game since their last loss.

Also, the Raiders have won nine of their last 10 games. In that time, the Raiders have scored an average of 6.4 goals per game.

The longest point streak belongs to Daxon Rudolph, who now has 10G-10A in his last 11 games. Rudolph put up a 12 game point streak last year in January, and now he’s one game away from beating the personal record he set last year.

The Raiders will head to Regina on Saturday to finish the home and home series, game time is 7:00 p.m.
