Manure as a fertilizer source

New research in P-E-I is looking at a possible climate solution in the farming world: cow manure.

Scientists and farmers are partnering together to test out research in real-world conditions to see how manure strengthen soils and lessen methane emissions on fields.

The research is overseen by Dr. Judith Nyiraneza, a scientist with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada.

Nyiraneza says using manure to fertilize fields has been done for centuries, but has fallen off in recent years.

The project is looking at several ways of applying manure, from letting cows graze on fields that will then be used for crops like potatoes, to injecting liquid manure directly underneath the soil.

The project is in its early stages, but so far the injection method has led to a 35 per cent reduction in nitrogen loss, and the grazing method has produced 28 per cent more potatoes.
