House fire in Nipawin investigated as suspicious

Dec 19, 2025 | 11:30 AM

RCMP said a recent fire in Nipawin that forced the residents to flee is being investigated as suspicious.

Nipawin Fire was called to Fifth Street East on Dec. 12 at about 10:30 p.m. and found a back deck fully engulfed in flames and the roof of the home just starting to burn.

In order to put out what they said was a ‘stubborn’ blaze, firefighters had to access the attic via the roof so they could chase hotspots.

Efforts were complicated by extreme cold that froze gear including hoses and nozzles. Firefighters had to use “crab claw looking hands” when their gloves froze solid, according to a social media post by the department.

“We were very fortunate to have a nice warm toasty shop right next door to warm everything and everyone up during evolutions.”

Local RCMP members also responded and called in fire investigators from the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency to help with the investigation.

The residents both exited safely.

Nipawin RCMP continue to investigate the fire and ask members of the public to report information about any suspicious activity or vehicles they observed in the Fifth Street East area of Nipawin on the evening of Dec. 12.
