Raiders acquire McCagherty, Man and Orsulak earn World Junior invites

The Prince Albert Raiders are going to see some changes to their lineup over the course of the next few weeks. One change will be the addition of a 19-year-old forward, the other will be less permanent as the two Czechian born players head to camp for the World Juniors.

First with the trade, the Raiders have acquired 6-0 tall, 183 pounds forward Maddix McCagherty in exchange for a fourth round pick in 2026, and a sixth round pick in 2027.

Originally from Kelowna, B.C., McCagherty was originally drafted 25th overall in the second round by the Swift Current Broncos in 2021. He made his debut that season with three games as a 15-year-old, and during his 16-year-old season he bounced between the Broncos, the KIJHL’s Kelowna Chiefs, and the BCHL’s Meritt Centennials.

In his 17-year-old season, McCagherty played full time in the WHL where he was traded partway through the season from Swift Current to the Wenatchee Wild, where he’s played ever since.

In 150 games in the WHL, McCagherty has 28G-39A-67P, but his production has been going up this season by a long shot. Last year, he posted 12G-17A-29P in 62 games, about 0.47 points per game. This season however, he has 6G-9A-15P in 22 games, averaging about 0.68 points per game on one of the worst ranked teams in the league.

“We’re excited to add Maddix to our group,” said Raiders general manager Curtis Hunt. “He can play in all situations throughout the lineup. He will add speed and an element of physicality, but is also proven to have an adept touch around the net. We look forward to getting him into the lineup.”

McCagherty will join the Raiders on their Alberta road swing, likely making his debut on Friday against the Calgary Hitmen.

Czech players named to World Junior camps

The Raiders will also be losing a couple of players after this road trip through Alberta as defenceman Matyas Man and goaltender Michal Orsulak have been invited to camp with Team Czechia for the upcoming IIHF World Junior Hockey Championships in Minneapolis and Saint Paul, Minnesota.

For Orsulak, his save percentage of 0.919 has him in the top five of the WHL, and his 1.99 sits as the best goals against average in the league. Orsulak is one of three goaltenders invited to the camp.

As for Man, the 6-5 defenceman has a +9 rating on the season, and has four points on the season including his first WHL goal.

The Czechs have announced a total of 26 players to their World Juniors roster, so the likelihood the two make the team is high. 11 of the total 26 players heading to Team Czechia’s camp are currently playing in the WHL.
