The Shyning’s new single “Falling” rising fast on the charts

Gathered together at a New Year’s Eve Party a couple years ago, members of Prince Albert’s The Shyning came up with the idea of doing a solid rock album.

Almost two years later, the first single “Falling” has dropped and is getting attention on radio stations across Saskatchewan, Alberta and Manitoba.

Lead singer and songwriter Chris McDonald said the inspiration for the song is about feeling like the world is a cruel place and something is always trying to take you down.

“So when you have someone to face it with, it feels like you can win the battle. And I think others can relate to it who have faced difficulties and had someone there to catch them when they fell, so to speak.”

The Shyning was formed in 2023 and consists of Chris McDonald on vocals, Kelly Kawula on guitar and vocals, Arthur Ashdown on bass guitar and vocals and Kenny Kuzniar on drums. Kawula recalled how smoothly the song came together.

“The Falling” happened to be the first riff I played for them and it just took off from there,” he said.

In addition to the radio play, the song is also available on iTunes, Spotify, YouTube Music and many other platforms. Kawula, who acknowledged how music promotion has changed, recalled the days of selling CD’s at a local store.

“It just strictly stuck around Saskatchewan, whereas through Spotify, we are getting listens and views from Sweden,” he said.

With respect to the full album, Kawula anticipated having it done next year. The band also plans to shoot a music video for the new single in January.

The band is also busy touring and their upcoming dates include Saturday night at The Black Rose Whiskey Club in Saskatoon; Snowden Bar Dec. 26 and The River in Nipawin on Dec. 31.

Kuzniar mentioned they are selling merchandise at their live shows, which consists of black shirts with the band’s logo.

“We’ve been selling quite a few so we are very appreciative we can move those and put those funds to our performing and recording,” he said.
