Mintos ‘pleasantly surprised’ with start to season

The Prince Albert Mintos management is pleased with how things have been going so far this season.

The Mintos are a third of the way through the Saskatchewan Male AAA Hockey League (SMAAAHL) and currently hold the seventh spot in the standings with a 9-7-0-0 (W-L-OTL-SOL) record through 16 games.

“Considering how young the team is and how many rookies we had, I think we’re pleasantly surprised where we are,” said Mintos general manager Dennis Pott about the season so far.

“I think we’re pretty close in the standings to where we should be, but all in all, with where we are now sitting in a playoff spot, we’re still in the hunt and we’re getting players back healthy, so we’re happy where we are in the standings right now.”

He added they expect the team to climb a bit; injured players Madden Dell and Cohen Greenwood will be back in the lineup within the next couple of weeks.

The team managed a weekend sweep in Wilcox over the Notre Dame Hounds in their latest set of games after losing back-to-back in Regina to the league-best Pat Canadians.

Entering their next game against the Contacts in Saskatoon on Thursday, the Mintos are led by rookie Maxim Cooper in the points department with 16, followed by October SMAAAHL Defenceman of the Month Liam Myhre with 14 points, and veteran Barret Berger and rookie Carter Hryciuk with ten each.

“Max has been a pleasant surprise for us, and it’s not just on the score sheet,” said Pott about their leading scorer. “He’s great in the room, he’s great in the community, he’s a quiet leader and he does the little things right. He makes his linemates better, he distributes the puck well – we can’t say enough good things about Max.”

The Mintos will see much of the same in terms of their opponents until the holiday break next month. The schedule includes three games against the Warman Wildcats, one against the Battlefords Stars, and two each against the Contacts, Saskatoon Blazers, and Moose Jaw Warriors.

Ahead of the holidays, as tradition, the Mintos are holding a winter clothing drive during their 1:30 p.m. game on Dec. 14 against the Blazers, where fans are asked to bring a winter clothing item to add to their donation bin.
