Coming into Tuesday’s matchup, the Prince Albert Raiders were the fifth ranked team in the CHL Power Rankings, while their opponent the Everett Silvertips were ranked second. The Silvertips were playing Raiden LeGall for the second straight night after earning a shutout the night before with one of the best save percentages in the league, while the Raiders had WHL Goalie of the Week Michal Orsulak.

The Raiders came out flying and never looked back, along with some big save from Orsulak, and earned a big 4-1 win over the Silvertips.

The game started with a frantic pace, back and forth action across the redline but neither team able to work super dangerous chances towards the goal. At the 5:22 mark however, the Raiders cracked LeGall on the rush. Justice Christensen sent the outlet pass for Ty Meunier up the wall, and he dropped the puck into the middle for Evan Smith who fired a quick wrist shot that beat LeGall for Smith’s fifth of the season.

Brayden Dube was given a unsportsmanlike penalty at the end of a play in the offensive zone, but he made it up to his team when he left the box. At 18:34, Aiden Oiring collected the puck in his own zone and sent it up the right wall for Owen Corkish. He entered the zone down the right and dropped the puck back for Dube coming out of the box, then toedragged into the middle and fired a great wrist shot under the bar for his seventh of the season.

After 1: Raiders 2 – 0 Silvertips, shots 9-8 Raiders

The Raiders started the second period with a powerplay but weren’t able to score, but they used the momentum of the next shift to tuck one home thanks to a great forecheck at 1:56. Corkish again started the forecheck and passed the puck behind the net for Oli Chenier to the left of the goal. He played it out front, it came off a body and right to Evan Smith, and he ripped a beautiful wrist shot under the bar for his seventh of the season and second of the night.

Just 31 seconds later at 2:27, the Raiders scored again. Brayden Dube helped work the puck back to the left point for Matyas Man, and he passed up the wall for Aiden Oiring. He then cut in towards the net on his backhand, absorbing contact and using his reach to tuck the puck in around LeGall for the 4-0 lead.

During the middle of the period, Michal Orsulak made one of his best saves of the night when Landon DuPont stole the puck for a shorthanded breakaway, but Orsulak stared him down on the first save and made a second on the rebound.

On their third powerplay of the game, the Silvertips were able to get one past Orsulak off a shot around a screen from the middle of the blueline by Rylan Gould.

After 2: Raiders 4 – 0 Silvertips, shots 12-9 Raiders, 21-17 Raiders overall

Owen Corkish started the third period in the penalty box for a full two minutes, but his teammates on the ice did great work to kill the penalty. As Corkish was coming back on the ice, it looked like the Silvertips were about to set up a screen shot, but Corkish hustled out of the box and picked the pocket of the Silvertips defenceman, quickly turning the Silvertips offensive opportunity that could have gotten them back into the game, into a rush for the Raiders.

The Raiders powerplay got three of their six powerplays in the game during the second period, but they weren’t able to score. Instead, it helped tick the clock down until they ran into penalty trouble late.

Down 5-on-3 for the final 1:26 of the game, a comeback from the Silvertips seemed unlikely, but Micahl Orsulak in net was determined to keep the score the way it was despite the seige coming his way. He had three fantastic saves in the dying minutes of the game, including staring down a point blank wrist shot from Detroit Red Wings prospect Carter Bear with his glove, and he finished the game with a little flare as he pumped up his bench, which is starting to become his trademark.

FINAL: Raiders 4 – 1 Silvertips, shots 15-7 Silvertips, 32-28 Silvertips overall

The Raiders went 0/6 on the powerplay, and have now gone 0/12 in the four games of the road swing. That said, the powerplay is clearly generating momentum for the Raiders and is moving the puck well, but just hasn’t been rewarded after a hot start to the season.

For just the second game this season, Riley Boychuk was held without a point in the game. Also for the second time, Evan Smith picked up two goals on the night.

Although he was only credited with one assist on the night, Oli Chenier was one of the best men on the ice for the entire game. He often found himself on the ice after powerplays and penalty kills, sometimes playing without his usual line to help the Raiders get their lines sorted out, and he caused a ton of havoc in the offensive zone along with some fantastic chances that were stopped by LeGall.

Michal Orsulak stopped 31 of the 32 shots he faced, good for a 0.969 save percentage on the night. At the other end, the win for the Raiders handed Raiden LeGall his first loss in regulation of the season.

The Raiders are back on the road Wednesday as they head to Portland to take on the Winterhawks.
