Developer announces plans to build Hyatt in The Yard

A third hotel is planned for Prince Albert’s new Yard district. In an email sent to paNOW, the developer said he plans to start construction this spring.

“We are pleased to bring a brand-new Hyatt dual-brand hotel to the Prince Albert market,” said the developer. “This project has been a long time coming, and we’re excited to offer more options for people visiting PA for leisure or work.”

The new hotel will reportedly offer 140 suites, a large indoor water park, dining options, including a steakhouse and a quick service restaurant.

The developer wants to keep their name private for now, but said negotiations are ongoing and an announcement is expected soon.

The concept for the hotel is to accomodate both short-term and extended stays; longer-term guests will have suites with full kitchens.

“As the city continues to grow and diversify, this project will be a perfect fit for the Prince Albert market,” the developer said. “With new amenities, dining, and entertainment options, we believe this development will transform the accommodation and dining experience in P.A. and help the city attract larger events in the years ahead.”

According to the information provided, both travelling families and businesspeople will be the target customers, but the property may also be an option for local residents seeking recreation.

Construction is scheduled to begin in spring 2026, with the first phase of the hotel expected to open by spring 2027.

This will make the third hotel in The Yard. A Holiday Inn was the first to be constructed right along Highway 3 and Prince Albert city council approved a height variance for a six-story hotel to be built next to the new liquor store there. That hotel, according to previous mayor Greg Dionne , is said to be a Marriott.

Prince Albert & District Chamber of Commerce CEO Patty Hughes, said her organization welcomes announcements of new businesses and sees signs of hope in the local economy. She said opportunities with critical mineral developments north of the city could also be a big economic driver.

“Taking a look at what the feds are investing on the critical mineral side is a huge benefit for us in Prince Albert,” she said. “That’s a great thing because what I think is happening is we’re seeing outside investment that’s coming into our city right now.”

The Hyatt announcement comes right on the heels of another announcement earlier this week that BMI Group, an Ontario-based company, bought the Prince Albert pulp mill and will re-develop it for a different use.

She believes more people will look at being part of what could be a ‘critical mineral corridor.’

Hughes said BMI Group not only looked at the mill, they also looked at residential development and the downtown.

“They have a real keen interest in residential and particularly downtown where they can come into communities and make a significant difference,” Hughes said.

The Prince Albert pulp mill will be BMI’s 12th such project and, according to Hughes, they have a good track record of success.
