Early flurry leads Raiders to fifth straight win over Blazers

After shutting out the Vancouver Giants on Wednesday, the Prince Albert Raiders welcomed their second team from B.C. in two days to the Art Hauser Centre, the Kamloops Blazers. Within the first five minutes of the game, the Raiders had nine different players on the scoresheet, and they’d come away with a 5-2 victory.

During the first shift of the game, the Blazers managed to hem the puck into the Raiders zone for a full minute before Dimitri Fortin managed to cover the puck. The Raiders wouldn’t get their first shot of the game until the 2:17 mark when Brock Cripps held the puck into the offensive zone and found Bennett Kelly in the middle of the blueline. Kelly fired a shot towards the net looking for a tip, and Evan Smith crossing in front managed to redirect the puck into the net for his second of the season.

Then 57 seconds later, the Raiders doubled the lead. Aiden Oiring was the last guy back in his zone, he sent a breakout pass from the left to Justice Christensen streaking over centre. Christensen then fed Brayden Dube on the right wall, and Dube waited for Christensen to crash the net before firing a hard pass towards Christensen’s backhand, and he managed a smooth tip to direct the puck into the net for his third goal in his last two games at 3:14.

Then at the 4:50 mark, the Raiders scored again. Riley Boychuk moved the puck from the half wall to Linden Burrett behind the goal line, and Burrett passed out front for Max Heise. The big centreman made a great spin move towards his backhand and tucked the puck in past an outstretched pad of goaltender Ivans Kufterins. Heise’s fourth of the season would end Kufterins’ night, bringing in Josh Edmonstone for the Blazers.

From there the game settled into a relentless pace back and forth, but the Blazers managed to strike before the halfway mark of the period. On a 2-on-1, a shot from Josh Evaschesen took a weird hop off Fortin’s pad, opening the lane for Nathan Behm to punch home the rebound at 9:48.

Before the end of the period, Jonah Sivertson driving the net earned a penalty shot after he was hooked, but despite a great move in tight towards his forehand Sivertson just barely ran out of room to beat the goaltender.

After 1: Raiders 3 – 1 Blazers, shots 17-12 Raiders

The first half of the second period flew by with only eight faceoffs in the first 13 minutes, but at the 14:07 mark, Oli Chenier made a great play to hold the puck in down the right wall before sending a pass to Boychuk waiting in the slot, and after eight straight assists to start the season Boychuk put home his first goal of the season.

At the 18:13 mark, the Blazers got one back when the league’s leading scorer JP Hurlbert got into a puck battle with Daxon Rudolph. It looked like Rudolph had won, but just as he got his head up to pass, Hurlbert took the puck back and sent a pass into the middle for a streaking Owen Cooper, and his onetimer found the back of the net.

After 2: Raiders 4 – 2 Blazers, shots 8-7 Blazers, 24-20 Raiders overall

There had only been three penalties in the first two periods of the game, a too many men call to Kamloops in the first period and two separate interference calls by the Raiders in the second, but the third period the Raiders were able to draw two infractions from a frustrated Blazers group.

Heise drew a hooking call seven minutes in and another Raider was tripped leaving the zone in the 15th minute, but the Raiders failed to score on the powerplay for the first time this season.

In the final two minutes, the Blazers pulled their goaltender, but the Raiders were the ones that benefitted. Aiden Oiring did great work to strip the puck from the Blazers near the blue line. Oiring likely had the time and space to try and hit the empty net from distance, but instead he made the smart play, feathering the puck off the wall for Jackson Kostiuk on a breakaway towards the empty net, and Kostiuk hit it for his first of the season at 18:51.

FINAL: Raiders 5 – 2 Blazers, shots 12-2 Raiders, 36-22 Raiders overall

With the win, the Raiders are one of two teams left in the league without a regulation loss. The other team is the Everett Silvertips, who have an identical 6-0-1 record.

On special teams, the Raiders went 0/3 on the night and were held scoreless for the first time this season. On the other hand, the penalty kill went 2/2, and now over the last three games the Raiders penalty kill has been a perfect 12/12.

The Raiders have had four different players stand at the top of team scoring this week. Coming into the week, Brayden Dube lead the Raiders in scoring with seven points, but Daxon Rudolph took the lead with eight points after Wednesday’s game with Vancouver. After Friday’s with Kamloops, Riley Boychuk and Aiden Oiring are tied for the team lead with nine points each.

For Boychuk, he hold an assist in every game this season, and along with his first goal of the year Friday night he now has 1G-8A-9P in seven games this year.

Dimitri Fortin went 20/22 between the pipes for a 0.909 save percentage on the night.

The Raiders will now get a full week of rest before welcoming the Regina Pats on Friday.
