Next year, youth in Sturgeon Lake will have a new hub that aims to protect them and help connect them with their culture

Leaders for the First Nation, located north of Prince Albert, announced on Tuesday, Sept. 30 (also Truth and Reconciliation Day) that they had begun construction on the new facility.

“Our children and youth need a space where they feel rooted, respected and inspired,” said Chief Christine Longjohn, in a news release. “The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step, and this centre will be the path that leads them back to their culture and identity.”

The building, which has walls partially up already, will include a multi-purpose room designed in the historical circle and have offices for a resident elder, prevention worker and facility manager.

It will also have a commercial kitchen and cultural display areas.

The chosen location next to the lake and forest means land-based learning will be woven into daily programming.

One of goals is to increase the amount of Child and Family Services programming which means a place for counselling sessions, sharing circles and family-based support.

“This centre is not just a building – it’s a seed planted for tomorrow,” said Councillor Anita Parenteau, who holds the portfolio for the project.

“With guidance and care, that seed will grow into a forest of strength showing that great oaks from little acorns grow.”

Construction is expected to be completed next fall.
