Three Raiders score first WHL goal in road win over Regina

After opening weekend saw the Raiders earn three out of a possible four points against the Saskatoon Blades on opening weekend, the Prince Albert Raiders went on the road for their first weekend road swing that started with a stop in Regina. With Steele Bass getting the start, some of the newly minted Raiders contributed in big ways, and they fought to a 6-4 win.

The Raiders got the first powerplay of the game early but failed to score, but they hit paydirt on their second. The puck started at the middle of the blueline on the stick of Daxon Rudolph, and he sent it to the right point for Riley Boychuk. He then fed the pass through the middle towards Brayden Dube, and even though the puck was slowed by a Pats defender along the way, Dube managed to make the adjustment to get the onetimer away and score his third of the season at 7:49.

On their third powerplay of the game, it was one of the new Raiders who earned their time to shine. Brock Cripps from the right point set up an Oli Chenier onetimer, but Chenier saw he had a man in front and took some weight off the shot, instead creating a great pass for Owen Corkish at the side of the goal who tipped it over Pats goaltender Kelton Pyne, off the cross bar, and into the net for his first WHL goal and point at 11:48.

On the same shift after the Raiders killed their first penalty of the game, Harrison Lodewyk worked the puck down the left wall and into the corner before he sent the puck out front. At the same time, Ben Harvey was streaking towards the net but got tangled up with a defender. Just as the puck came to Harvey, he made a great spin move to get free, get his stick down, and fire Lodewyk’s pass into the back of the net for Harvey’s first in the WHL at 16:01.

After 1: Raiders 3 – 0 Pats, shots 11-5 Raiders

Just 1:04 into the second period, the Raiders veterans got back on the board. With Dube in the corner on the forecheck, he stripped a Pats defender and sent the puck behind the net for Aiden Oiring, and Oiring made a quick move to scoop the puck off the wall and tuck it in next to the post for his second of the season.

That goal by the Raiders chased Kelton Pyne out of the goal and brought in Regina local Taylor Tabashniuk between the pipes, and that seemed to spark the Pats.

Then the Pats started to battle back. At the 8:12 mark, Cohen Klassen sent a pass off the right wall in front of the net for Julian Maze. He had no room to get something by on his backhand, so Maze went between the legs for his shot instead, and the puck rode up the arm of Bass and into the back of the net.

Then on their second powerplay of the game, the Pats got on the board again when Julian Maze took a shot from the middle of the blueline, it came back off the glass, and Caden Brown at the side of the net managed to tuck it in at 13:38.

Then at 17:41, the Pats scored again thanks to Cohen Klassen again. This time the puck was in the middle of a scramble in the Raiders slot, and it came out to the corner for Liam Pue. The 15-year-old made a quick pass to the middle, and Klassen tipped it home to bring the Pats within one.

After 2: Raiders 4 – 3 Pats, shots 13-6 Raiders, 24-11 Raiders overall

After faltering a bit in the second period, the Raiders got back on the board quickly. Max Heise sent the puck up the wall for another Harrison Lodewyk rush down the right wall, and Lodewyk dropped the puck back up the wall for Daxon Rudolph who rifled home his second of the season just seven seconds into the period.

From there, the middle of the period was a battle. The Pats pressed, but the Raiders managed to protect the net until the Pats pulled their goaltender with over three minutes left. At 17:27, the Pats worked the puck into the middle of the blueline for Reese Hamilton, and thanks to the extra man Hamilton had a great screen to use as he fired it in through traffic, again making it a one goal game.

With the net empty again however, the Pats got caught and both Rudolph and Linden Burrett worked the puck out to centre for Max Heise, and from the red line he hit the open cage for his first goal in the WHL at 18:29.

FINAL: Raiders 6 – 4 Pats, shots 11-7 Pats, 31-22 Raiders overall

Steele Bass stopped 18 of 22 shots faced, good for a 0.818 save percentage, in his first win in the WHL. In three games to start the season, the Raiders have dressed three goaltenders and earned a point in each game.

Brayden Dube and Aiden Oiring have started the season on three game point streaks, Dube with 3G-2A and Oiring with 2G-2A.
