Ronald McDonald House Charities Saskatchewan celebrates 40 years

It has been 14,600 nights since Ronald McDonald House Charities Saskatchewan (RMHC-SK) opened its doors in 1985.

During the last 40 years, the charity has reached a few major milestones: over 28,000 families have been served and it has 86 per cent of its $39.9-million fundraising goal achieved for the provincial expansion (Miles to Go Campaign). Construction of two new RMHC houses in Saskatchewan is underway, including one in Prince Albert.

Now, the non-profit organization that provides a ‘home away from home’ for families of children with serious illnesses or injuries, is celebrating it’s 40th anniversary by raising $400,000 with the support of Mosaic as a $100,000 matching donor.

“The matching gift of $100,000 to the Miles to Go Campaign to support Saskatchewan families is a true investment into the families of our province. We are so grateful for the support provided this year by Mosaic, as we build and grow into our new communities,” said Tammy Forrester, CEO of RMHC-SK.

The fundraiser kicked off across the province Saturday with a free BBQ and family friendly events. In Prince Albert, it also provided an opportunity for supporters to see what lies ahead through artist renderings of the Ronald McDonald House under construction.

Currently, RMHC-SK operates a room within the Victoria Hospital for families of sick children to spend time in. The new building, located less than a block from the hospital, will accommodate 12 families in private rooms, a large kitchen area and rooms for gaming and fitness.

On its website, RMHC-SK said families in the north need better support.

‘They lack access to specialized healthcare, resulting in children needing to stay in the hospital for longer periods of time. A home in Prince Albert will create ease of transition and increased access to family-centered care during a very challenging time.’

To help celebrate their 40th year, RMHC-SK is encouraging the public to host a ‘Forty for 40 Fundraiser.’ The idea is to gather 40 people to donate $40 each. Participants can register at rmhcsk.ca.
