Prince Albert landlord shooting case proceeding to trial at King’s Bench

A man accused of shooting a Prince Albert landlord in the throat, is maintaining his innocence and has opted to be tried by judge and jury at Court of King’s Bench.

Preston Ray Bird, whose bail was denied last month, appeared by video when his case was discussed Tuesday afternoon at provincial court.

His lawyer Patrick McDougall entered not guilty pleas to a number of charges including aggravated assault, assault with a weapon, discharging a firearm with intent to injure, and possession of an unauthorized firearm.

At this stage, no trial dates have been set.

The shooting incident occurred on the evening of June 4. At approximately 6:45 p.m, police responded to a house in the 1900 block of 14th Street West.

Officers began to render aid to the victim before Parkland Ambulance arrived on scene and transported the 57-year-old to hospital with serious injuries.

Through their investigation, officers learned the suspect fled the scene on a bike.

On July 23, Bird was arrested in the 800 Block of 15th St. E.

Due to the fact that the offence occurred during an eviction gone bad, the story grabbed provincial attention and shone a spotlight on the issues landlords in the city are facing.

Bird was not the former tenant but is reportedly well known to the woman who was.

Meanwhile, the man who was shot was left paralyzed from the neck down and remains in hospital. His sister confirmed for paNOW he has regained the ability to talk.

Bird also has an outstanding charge related to breach of a conditional sentence order. That matter will return to provincial court on Sept. 16.
