Man charged after setting large grass fire near Prince Albert

Sep 5, 2025 | 11:56 AM

A 35-year-old man is behind bars after igniting a grass fire just north of Prince Albert earlier this week.

On Wednesday at around 2:30 p.m., Prince Albert RCMP were notified by Buckland Fire and Rescue of a large grass fire burning along Highway 2, roughly five kilometers north of the city.

Initial reports signalled that the fire may have been intentionally set, and officers confirmed that the blaze was human-caused following their investigation. Thankfully, the fire was quickly brought under control and extinguished by on-scene firefighters.

A short time later, police arrested Larry Bird of Little Red River First Nation near the scene and charged him with arson (damage to property) and failure to comply with the conditions of a probation order to not carry incendiary devices, such as lighters or matches.

He has also been charged with an allegation of breaching the conditions of a conditional sentence order not to possess a lighter, from July 16, 2025.

“Situations like this are gravely concerning, especially in light of the devastating fire season Northern Saskatchewan has experienced,” says Prince Albert RCMP officer Sgt. Dan Lozinski.

Larry Bird appeared in Prince Albert Provincial Court on Friday morning.
