Matt Henry has become the newest Prince Albert-born player to go pro.

The 21-year-old put pen to paper with the Tulsa Oilers of the ECHL, formerly the East Coast Hockey League, after two seasons with the Brandon Wheat Kings in the Western Hockey League (WHL).

Standing at 6’2”, 216 lbs, Henry played in 94 games for the Wheat Kings from 2022-24, scoring two goals and notching an assist while registering a whopping 240 PIMs.

“Matt is a gritty forward,” said Head Coach Rob Murray in a release.

“He’s a name that popped up through Scott when looking to add a serious physical presence to our team. He uses that physicality to create space on the ice and brings a style of play that should translate well to the pro game. Guys that hit and have a willingness to play with a nasty streak, like Matt, don’t come along as often as they used to. We are happy to have him and look forward to what he brings at the pro level.”

Prior to joining Brandon, Henry spent a year with the Battlefords North Stars in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL), netting 16 points (4G-12A) and 216 PIM in 52 games.

Henry will make his pro debut with the Oilers on Oct. 17 when Tulsa squares off with the Iowa Heartlanders.

Tulsa is the ECHL affiliate of the American Hockey League’s (AHL) San Diego Gulls, and the National Hockey League’s (NHL) Anaheim Ducks.
