September inquest scheduled for woman who died in Pine Grove

An inquest into the circumstances surrounding the death of Lynette Kakakaway in Pine Grove Correctional Centre will happen next month.

The 33-year-old woman was found unresponsive in her cell on June 24, 2022. Staff began life-saving efforts and called EMS, but they were not successful and Kakakaway was pronounced deceased.

Inquests are mandated by law when a person dies in custody unless the coroner is satisfied the death was entirely due to natural causes and was not preventable.

This inquest will begin with jury selection on Monday, Sept.15 at the Coronet Hotel.

As is standard, five days are allowed for the inquest to hear from witnesses. The jury may make recommendations to prevent similar deaths.
