Province opens new affordable housing duplexes in Prince Albert

The province of Saskatchewan announced the addition of some affordable housing in Prince Albert on Friday in the form of two new duplexes.

The low-income homes are located on 12th Street W and 14th Street W, and were built by River Bank Development Corporation, a non-profit corporation known for its work developing affordable housing units for low-income families and individuals.

The duplexes are split into a three-bedroom unit upstairs and a two-bedroom unit downstairs, and have already been rented out with families already moved in.

“Today is truly a celebration, knowing the four units are giving deserving families an affordable and supportive place to call home,” said Alana Ross, Minister of Parks, Culture and Sport. “This project represents our government’s dedication to expanding affordable housing throughout the province, and giving families the foundation they need to thrive in their lives and in our community.”

The construction of the homes was done as part of the River Bank Infill Solutions project, a Federal and Provincial commitment to delivering housing solutions across the province for those who need it most.

For this development, the Canadian and Saskatchewan governments jointly invested $750,000 for the duplex’s construction, while Conexus Credit Union Mortgage Financing donated $330,000, and the City of Prince Albert gave $20,000. KidsFirst, Native Co-ordinating Council, and Family Futures are also donating their time to the tenants and families to provide support services on basic life skills.

“These homes are more than bricks and mortar. [They] are places where children will grow, where families will feel secure, and where neighbourhood connections will flourish. With a school, a park, and a Community Center just steps away, this is exactly the kind of setting where people can put down roots and thrive,” said Ward 7 councillor Dawn Kilmer, speaking on behalf of Mayor Bill Powalinsky.

Since Saskatchewan started working with River Bank Developments in 2007, 40 affordable housing units have been added in Prince Albert. The four units announced Friday bring that total to 44.

Although not in attendance, Desnethé—Missinippi—Churchill River MP Buckley Belanger made a statement about the affordable duplexes, which was read by River Bank board member Merv Bender.

“On behalf of the Government of Canada, I would like to thank the province of Saskatchewan and the city of Prince Albert for their commitment and collaboration in getting projects like this one out of the realm of ideas and into reality. This is an incredible addition to the Prince Albert community, and I congratulate and thank everyone for their ongoing commitment to affordable housing.”
