Transforming downtown into a sports paradise for local youth

Apr 14, 2025 | 4:37 PM

Imagine playing your favorite sports, hearing from local athletes, and enjoying great food all in the heart of Prince Albert’s downtown.

Well imagine no more,! On May 10, for the third year in a row, downtown Prince Albert will transform for Sports on Central.

This one of a kind event will be hosted at Plaza 88 and the surrounding streets (Central & 9th) and will feature a variety of sports for kids to play and learn about.

“A lot of kids probably don’t even know all the different sports offered within Prince Albert and what is available to them. We have so many different sports opportunities in our city,” said Scott Manson who is helping to organize the event.

“We’re going to have three basketball courts, a football field and a soccer field down 9th Street, a kids zone for the little ones with bouncy castles, facepaint, and their own soccer field on Central Ave., and a hockey rink in the Plaza 88 parking lot along with booths representing the different organizations and clubs.”

One of the highlights of the day will be a hockey game played between members of the Prince Albert Police Service and Prince Albert Fire Department, entering our third year the series is tied 1-1.

The day will also feature guest appearances by the Prince Albert Raiders, mintos, local teams, and your favorite mascots. The speakers this year will all be local individuals who have had success in their fields and have seen the importance of sports. Gage Grassick, Ali Diehl, and Norma Hanson will be our speakers this year, come and support them at the main stage.

So why hold such a massive event for the city in the first place? Sports on Central is a community initiative led by Embassy Church, driven by a desire to invest in and empower the youth of Prince Albert. The event is brought to life by a large and dedicated team, including Mayer and Manson, who are helping coordinate the many moving parts. The goal is to not only to introduce kids to the range of sports available in the city, but also to let them know they’re seen and valued by their community.

“It’s all about the kids and providing them an opportunity to play sports,” said Manson. “To come out for a fun day, to get a good experience and to also highlight the opportunities in their city.”

“I think sometimes when you’re a youth, you think that you’re alone or that nobody sees you and this is something that is pointing to them saying that there’s a whole community from different businesses and different walks of life that are coming together to celebrate them,” added Mayer.

“I’ve heard so many stories from so many people on how sports have helped them in their life, that it was something that saved them when they were going through hard times.”

The event will also highlight downtown Prince Albert as the streets around Plaza 88 will be used for those attending and playing the different sports. Mayer said she’s in love with the city and the downtown and hopes this helps bring vibrancy to the area.

“I think that if we can turn the positivity around for our downtown and bring people downtown that we can see some big, positive changes,” she said.

“I think our downtown is underrated and it has a lot of potential to thrive,” added Manson “So we want to do something for the downtown area as well.”

An event of this magnitude requires a lot of work from volunteers in the community, which the coordinators are still looking for.

“The first two years were such a success and we want to build off of them. We’ve got some new clubs attending this year, and we are expecting attendance to rise since people now have seen just how impactful and fun this event is,” said Manson. “We are so thankful to everyone who has gotten behind our event and made it such a success by sponsoring, volunteering, or by showing up and participating in the fun!”

KidSport has once again been chosen as the charity of choice for Sports on Central, all the money raised through our 50/50 will be donated to KidSport as a very real way to get kids involved in sports through the great work they do right here in our community.
