Hundreds of the province’s best archers were in Prince Albert this weekend for the Indoor Junior Olympic Program (JOP) and the Saskatchewan Archery Association’s (SAA) Indoor Provincial Target Championship.

The events were held at the Alfred Jenkins Fieldhouse and was the fourth year in a row that the Timberland Bowbenders have hosted.

Chairman of the host committee Stacey Moran said this year’s shoot was the biggest event of its kind anywhere in the country, with almost 800 participants.

“It’s the largest [archery event] in the province and the largest indoor event in Canada. Probably the largest for archery in Canada,” he said, adding the events will be back in Prince Albert in 2026 for a fifth straight year.

The separate events were held on different days, with the JOP taking place on Saturday with 467 competitors, while the Indoor Provincial Target Championship was on Sunday and attracted around 330. Archers in the JOP ranged in age from 6 to 20, while provincials ranged in age from 6 to 65 and older.

Also competing this weekend were a handful of archers preparing for nationals, including Gage Malenfant. The 16-year-old is a provincial champion and said he’s nervous and excited for the opportunity to represent the province on the national level.

“I’m going to go shoot, try my best. See where I sit with everyone in Canada,” he said. “I’d like to make the podium, be in the top five at least.”

Following this weekend, the event next on the SAA’s schedule is the 2025 Frontier Bowmen Indoor 3D Classic which will be held in Regina from April 26-27.
