CUPE retracts statement on Northern Lights budget shortfall

Apr 10, 2025 | 1:08 PM

The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) have retracted a statement suggesting there was to be upcoming layoffs and a large budget shortfall at the Northern Lights School Division.

The media release, which was issued Wednesday, had stated more than 100 workers were potentially facing layoffs due to a lack of $7 million in federal funding via Jordan’s Principle.

larongeNOW reached out to Northern Lights Director of Education Jason Young, who disputed the release and said he had no knowledge of what had been announced by CUPE. In reality, he said the division only has 10 staff members paid through that funding source and there has been no communication of funding being discontinued.

On Thursday, CUPE released a retraction noting the layoffs of 100 workers mentioned in the press release are occurring in the Northern Lights School Division in Alberta. They also apologized for any confusion they may have caused.
