Goaltender battle starts playoffs between Raiders and Oil Kings

Game one of the playoffs has come and gone for the Prince Albert Raiders and the Edmonton Oil Kings. The two teams started off with a fast paced, hard checking game that saw the Oil Kings come away with a 3-1 win after an empty netter late.

Things looked like they were going to start great for the Prince Albert Raiders when they got a powerplay in the first few seconds of the game. Unforetunately however, the Oil Kings would get a clear down the ice and the puck would bounce out front of Max Hildebrand in no man’s land. Caught between staying in goal and playing the puck, Hildebrand was caught at the top of his crease by a streaking Gracyn Sawchyn and Sawchyn took the puck and tucked it around Hildebrand for a shorthanded goal just 29 seconds in.

The Raiders and Oil Kings would battle back and forth for the rest of the period, and a hardworking goal from Niall Crocker would tie things up late in the period. Daxon Rudolph from the right point would fire a shot wide of the goal, bouncing it off the wall directly to Riley Boychuk. Boychuk would try to put the puck on goal but was blocked, and the puck came to Crocker who put it into the back of the net at 18:34.

A baffling situation happened near the end of the period where Ethan Bibeau and Rhys Pederson would lock up at centre and wrestle to the point Bibeau lost his helmet, and even with a referee standing right overtop of them no penalty was called. Instead, Oli Chenier was punched in the face at the other end, and somehow came away with a penalty that would give the Raiders over a minute of penalty to kill to start the second.

After 1: Raiders 1 – 1 Oil Kings, shots 13-10 Oil Kings

The Raiders got the early kill and another after that, but the Oil Kings would capitalize on a mistake at the 9:03 mark. Gavin Hodnett would collect the puck in the corner to the right of Hildebrand, and he’d find Landon Hanson coming in to Hildebrand’s left. Hildebrand was challenging the shot at the top of the crease, and Hanson made a great move to bring the puck behind Hildebrand and tuck it home.

The Raiders would get the only other powerplay of the period when Gracyn Sawchyn was given a double minor for high sticking Oli Chenier in the final three minutes of the period, giving the Raiders their third and fourth opportunities of the night. A great chance on that powerplay would see Riley Boychuk get the puck in the middle of the slot for a onetimer, but Alex Worthington made the stop.

After 2: Raiders 1 – 2 Oil Kings, shots 12-11 Oil Kings, 25-21 Oil Kings overall

The Raiders would fail to capitalize on the powerplay, and their fifth chance on the man advantage that came shortly after Sawchyn’s penalty ended, and then the Raiders would go on the defensive with Jackson Kostiuk in the box. We even got some 4-on-4 when Justice Christensen crosschecked Joe Iginla who took an embellishment penalty, but still no scoring.

The Raiders would pull their goalie after a timeout, and after a quick chance on goal was stopped, Hodnett got the puck to Gracyn Sawchyn once more, and he didn’t even cross the redline before he fired into the empty net for his second of the game at 18:23.

FINAL: Raiders 1 – 3 Oil Kings, shots 15-11 Oil Kings, 40-32 Oil Kings overall

The Raiders are now down 1-0 in the series between the two teams. Game two goes Saturday night in Prince Albert at 7:00 p.m.
