Gray’s Funeral Chapel: Compassion and community dedication since 1993

Mar 25, 2025 | 1:54 PM

Trust, Integrity, Compassion, Family, Community. These are just a few of the reassuring words that come to mind when you think of Gray’s Funeral Chapel, the recipient of the 2025 BOB Award for Best Funeral Home.

Part of the community since 1993, Gray’s Funeral Chapel has long been the trusted funeral service provider for Prince Albert and area. Joining the Arbor Memorial family in 2023, which includes River Park, and the long-standing landmark Prince Albert Memorial Gardens. The group is the only organization locally that offers complete funeral home, crematorium, and private cemetery services, all right here in the city of Prince Albert; providing Prince Albert and area premium, full-service death care.

Historically, funeral homes were often multi-generational family operations, providing service in a small geographical area. As has been the trend with many companies in various industries, very few funeral home owners have children who will decide to follow in the path of their parents, leaving nobody to take over operation of the funeral home when they decide to retire. Canadian company Arbor Memorial has bucked that trend, now in their fourth generation of family ownership, but has also embraced the change by adding established funeral homes to their family of funeral homes, crematoriums, and cemeteries across Canada. This network of funeral homes allows Gray’s Funeral Chapel to offer a wide arrangement of services, whether planning ahead for peace of mind, or at the time of need, to provide options for every budget and taste, unique to every individual. Believing a funeral or celebration of life doesn’t have to be expensive to be meaningful.

While being part of the Arbor Memorial Family, Gray’s Funeral Chapel also has the benefit of being locally operated. The staff of Gray’s Funeral Chapel are long time community members of Prince Albert and area. This adds to the dedication they have in serving the greater need of the community and its residents, finding ways to give back through charity and service clubs, by volunteering and looking to be a part of the greater good. Gray’s and the Prince Albert Arbor team are also honored to serve our community by providing numerous free events throughout the year. We are also greatly supported by Arbor Memorial through the Arbor Memorial Foundation which matches contributions from its employees and has allowed us to give back significant financial donations to community groups and events in Prince Albert and area. This commitment to the community has been recognized by being awarded the 2024 Samuel McLeod Business Award in Community Involvement, and as Business of the Year.

Whether at the time of need or planning ahead, the team at Gray’s Funeral Chapel is ready to serve with the compassion, and integrity you would expect from your local death care providers, supported by the resources and standards of a nation-wide company.

Mary MacWilliams is no stranger to helping people in their time of need. As an integral member of the Gray’s Funeral Chapel team, Mary brings renewed vision and an innovative perspective to creating a unique celebration of life, while being committed to the sacred time honoured traditions of the past.

Her experiences in life led her to find her calling- a career in funeral service caring for families and serving her community.

For many years Mary owned and operated a care home in Prince Albert, providing senior citizens a safe and comfortable place to call home. Much of her time and energy was spent juggling the demands of owning and operating her business, taking time away from her passion- the direct and personal care of each and every individual. So, Mary decided to take a new career path, and her dedication and hard work led her to become a Funeral Director. In this way, her entire focus could remain on the needs of the families she would serve who had just experienced the loss of a loved one. It is this attention to families that has earned her the votes of Prince Albert as the BOB 2025 Best Funeral Director / Planner.

It is her honor to be able to guide families in planning a meaningful goodbye. Losing a loved one is one of the most difficult times anyone will ever experience. By helping the bereaved navigate through this process and begin their grief journey, Mary finds fulfillment by being there for others int their time of need. Listening to a family’s wishes, providing options to make an informed and thoughtful decision, and working with families to create a one of a kind experience is what is important to Mary. Whether it is a simple family gathering, a full personalized Funeral Service or Celebration of Life, she believes every life is worth celebrating and commemorating. And her commitment to families doesn’t end after the funeral service. She also loves maintaining connections with families and her community; her selfless attitude and genuine care for others truly sets her apart.

Mary’s genuine compassion, kindness, care, and attention to families has earned her the trust of the families she has served, and has earned her the title of Best of the Best.
