New report says cereal production in Canada is sustainable

Cereals Canada focused on five markets and the United States that were part of the 2024 New Wheat Crop Trade and Technical Missions.

Global Markets for Canadian Wheat: Key Insights Report was released in conjunction with a webinar targeted at farmers, researchers, and industry members.

Cereals Canada vice president of markets and trade Mark Walker said Canada is expected to export 26.2 million tonnes of wheat to over 80 countries this year, making it the third largest exporter of wheat and top exporter of high quality, high protein wheat in the world for the second year in a row.

“This report is just a snapshot of the key markets that we work with, but underpins the importance of maintaining consistent, targeted market support and trade advocacy for Canadian wheat,” he said.

The versatility of Canadian wheat in a diverse range of end products has resulted in widespread global acceptance and steady demand in global markets. Alone, or blended with wheats of other types, Canadian wheat supports the production of high-volume pan breads, hearth and flat breads, pastries, cookies, crackers, noodles, pasta, and couscous in over 80 countries.

To ensure that customers understand the quality characteristics that are unique to Canadian non-durum and durum wheat, and how to optimize the performance in milling and end product processing, Walker said Cereals Canada provides customized programs, training, and targeted technical support for global customers.

“Providing technical support to customers around the world not only helps to optimize their knowledge of Canadian wheat quality and functionality, but it also allows our team to build relationships and identify opportunities for market diversification,” Walker said. “There has never been a more important time to focus our efforts on protecting, maintaining, and growing global markets for Canadian wheat.”
