A-O-vertime hero: Oiring leads Raiders over Rebels

With the Prince Albert Raiders losing three straight games, they were in need of a win on Friday as they went into Red Deer to take on the Rebels who were fighting for their playoff lives. After a wild west of a first period with six goals, the Raiders would go to overtime with a hat trick performance from Aiden Oiring ended things in overtime 4-3.

The Raiders on special teams started things off at the 3:36 mark when Daxon Rudolph sent the puck to the middle of the point for Tomas Mrsic. He fired a shot on goal that hit the post and popped out to the slot for Aiden Oiring battling for position, and he potted it for his first of the night and 26th of the season.

Then the Rebels went on a run. It started at the 8:59 mark when Jaxon Fuder picked up the puck behind his net and brought the puck up the right wall, then cut left over the red line and went down the left wall in the Raiders zone. He took it behind the net before coming out front on his forehand, ripping a shot on goal to score.

At the 12:55 mark, Fuder made a similar play, coming around behind the net and firing, but his shot was blocked but still came to the front of the net. Gleb Semenov hammered at the rebound and practically climbed overtop of Dimitri Fortin in goal to put the rebound home.

The Rebels made it 3-1 at the 14:29 mark on the rush. Semenov at centre would send a pass to the right wall for Kalan Lind streaking down the wall. Lind would get a partial break, roofing his wrist shot to finish the run for the Rebels.

Then the Raiders would get back to their scoring way at the 15:38 mark. On their second powerplay, Mrsic sent the pass to Rudolph this time in the middle, and Rudolph’s shot was tipped by Niall Crocker in his office chair in front of the net for his 26th of the year.

With only four games of the season left, the Raiders finally got their first shorthanded goal of the season. Oiring blocked a shot and sped up the ice on a 2-on-1 with Crocker, but the passing lane was blocked. Oiring would find the back of the net with the shot for his second of the game and his 27th of the year.

After 1: Raiders 3 – 3 Rebels, shots 11-11

After the wild west of the first period, the second and third periods didn’t result in any goals. The Raiders had two penalties to kill off, but they managed to fend them off.

Late in the period, Ethan Bibeau and Jaxon Fuder dropped the gloves but were only given offsetting roughing calls when the officials stopped the fight from happening. Then with four seconds left, Lukas Dragicevic would drop the gloves against Ollie Josephson that ended with a Dragicevic hip-throw.

After 2: Raiders 3 – 3 Rebels, shots 8-6 Rebels, 19-17 Rebels overall

The third period was the same, no goals but a powerplay either side. Evan Smith took a penalty at the 18:13 mark, which led into overtime.

After 3: Raiders 3 – 3 Rebels, shots 9-5 Rebels, 28-22 Rebels overall

In overtime, Aiden Oiring put his team on his back one more time. In the offensive zone, Oiring would take the puck away to the left of the goaltender and walk out front on the backhand, but he was pokechecked into the opposite side. A Rebels defender would take the puck and faked going up the right wall before sending the puck below the goal line, but Oiring read the play and took it away with an open look at the net on his forehand. This time he had time, space, and out waited the goaltender before roofing it for his 28th of the season and his first hat trick of his career.

FINAL: Raiders 4 – 3 Rebels (OT), shots 3-1 Raiders, 29-25 Rebels overall

With the Raiders win, they snapped a three game losing skid. Both Saskatoon and Brandon picked up wins on the night as well, meaning the Raiders stay in third in the East Division and trail the two teams by a point. They do climb in the standings though, now up two points over the Edmonton Oil Kings for sixth in the Eastern Conference.
