Mintos facing elimination after Pat C’s take Game 2

The Prince Albert Mintos now have their backs against the wall after dropping Game 2 of their playoff series against the Regina Pat Canadians.

The Mintos fell 4-2 in Game 2 at the Art Hauser Centre following a 3-2 defeat in Game 1 in Regina on Sunday.

After getting outshot 46-17 in Game 2, P.A.’s Head Coach Doan Smith said the team needs more pucks on net.

“We’re a different team where for some reason, we prioritize as shooters the quality over the quantity [of shots]. We need to find the mix. Right now, we’re passing up on shooting areas we need to shoot in. Again, our quality levels are high it’s just, how do we gain the quantity levels and not over handle the puck?”

“We got offensive guys and some days they click and some days they don’t,” he continued. “Tonight, the puck bobbled on the guys we needed it not to and it is what it is at the end of the day.”

Penalties proved costly once again for P.A., taking six in the game which resulted in Regina scoring three powerplay goals. Across both Games 1 and 2, the Pat Canadians have scored five of their seven goals on the man advantage, compared to the Mintos one powerplay marker in four goals.

“We got to play a brand of hockey that is frustrating because they got so many skilled guys, we got to frustrate them. We know it’s going to lead to penalties, we just got to minimize them. 5-on-5, I do believe we’re the better team and it’s shown through the first two games of the series.”

Lincoln Rogers and Jordon Abrametz were the goal-getters in Game 2 for P.A., while Luke Senick had two assists and Carter Bergen had one.

For Regina, Prince Albert Raiders prospect Jonah Sivertson along with Cooper Bratton, Cruz Klapak, and Maddox Schultz found the back of the net. Schultz also had an assist while Ethan Dundas had three helpers, and Ethan Young, Nathan Gardiner, and Boston Tait each had one.

Between the pipes for the Mintos and earning the Home Star of the game was Josh Henry, making 42 saves while Regina’s Taylor Tabashniuk had 15 stops on the night.

Heading into Game 3, Smith said it’s the exact opposite of what the team faced at this time last season.

“It’s the reverse of what the Mintos experienced last year being up two and losing three in a row, so we need to pull what happened to them last year [into] this year. We know that we’re going to be in it Friday night when we go down there. We need to do our job and do the right things. We do have it within the dressing room, we have the ability to [do our job] and I believe in them, and they believe in themselves. Ultimately, we just we need to put another effort together where the outcome just needs to change.”

Game 3 is set for Friday at 7:45 p.m. in Regina at Co-Operators Arena #6. If necessary, Game 4 will be played the following day on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. in Prince Albert, followed by Game 5 in Regina on Monday at 8 p.m.
