Mintos split pair of weekday games as final week of regular season continues

It’s coming down to the wire in the Sask. Male AAA Hockey League (SMAAAHL) and with the playoff teams already determined, it’s now just matter of figuring out who plays who.

For the Prince Albert Mintos, they currently sit seventh in league standings heading into the final few days of the regular season and although they can’t move up in the standings, P.A. could drop down to eighth by the end of the final league contest on Tuesday.

Entering the final week of play, the Mintos had four games left on the schedule with a pair of midweek contests.

The first was on Wednesday night in Prince Albert when the Mintos welcomed the reigning back-to-back league champions Saskatoon Blazers before heading west to Battlefords to take on the Stars on Thursday.

Against Saskatoon, the Mintos found themselves trailing 1-0 to start the second, but they would be behind for long as Jordon Abrametz got P.A. on the board early in the frame.

After Tyson Medernach restored the lead for the Blazers later in the period, Brock Kolibab tied it back up for the Mintos with just over a minute to play, heading into the third knotted at two.

There, things took a turn for the worst as Prince Albert fell apart in the final twenty minutes, giving up five goals as the Mintos fell 7-2.

Jayden Blanchette stayed between the pipes for the entire game, making 30 saves in the loss.

COMPLETE BOX SCORE (Wednesday)

In their game on Thursday against Battlefords, things went a bit smoother as the Mintos were able to snap their three-game skid.

Landin Frank got the party started early in the first, giving P.A. the lead less than three minutes in.

Following Kaegan Lowe’s game-tying marker with 6:10 remaining, Kolibab scored with 41 seconds to play, re-establishing the one-goal lead heading into the second.

After Kolibab and Frank each potted their second of the game to make it 4-1 early in the frame, Waylon Gardipy lit the lamp twice for the Stars in the final 2:30 of the period to keep it a one-goal game entering the third.

The score stayed that way for much of the final frame before Lincoln Rogers added one for the road for P.A., notching his 14th of the campaign to help the Mintos capture a 5-3 win in their final road game of the season.

Rookie netminder Alex Gray collected his first AAA win, making 42 stops to help the Mintos to a 21-19-2 (W-L-OTL) record this season.

COMPLETE BOX SCORE (Thursday)

The Mintos now head into their final weekend of play in the regular season, playing host to the Swift Current Legionnaires for a pair of games. The first is slated for 7 p.m. Saturday, while the second and final game is set for 1:30 p.m. Sunday. Both contests will be played at the Art Hauser Centre.
