New downtown Prince Albert restaurant offers taste of Africa

There’s a big appetite in Prince Albert for new business, and the latest addition to the city’s downtown area is hoping to satisfy some of that hunger.

Luxe Plate African Restaurant opened on Friday at 1112 Central Avenue. Owner Opeyemi Erese has been in the city for about two years and explained to paNOW that she was exposed to the food industry while growing up in Nigeria because her mother had a restaurant, but she never thought one day she would have her own.

“But then I came to Prince Albert and I I took a cooking program at Sask Polytech and it just kind of changed everything. I just sort of found a love for cooking and I love to host people, I love to feed people, and so it just kind of grew from there,” she said.

Prince Albert’s African community has been growing and to date there has been only one other restaurant in the city offering Nigerian cuisine. Erese feels it’s good to be able to add to the food and culture of Prince Albert.

“And secondly, we’ve been doing a little bit of catering on the side, so we’ve been having a lot of orders and demand for African food. So that kind of prompted us to take it to the next step,” she said.

All the food served at the restaurant is homemade by Erese.

“I’m Nigerian and home is far away, so if I can have a place where people can come and you know, eat and feel like home, that’s a win for me.,” she explained.

The restaurant will be open Tuesday to Saturdays from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m., but Erese noted as they get more settled in, they may adjust those times.
