‘This is my first time’: alleged arsonist makes first court appearance

Prior to being remanded back into custody, a man accused of arson with disregard for human life, advised a judge he would require medical help as he was likely going to experience withdrawals from drugs.

Jonathon Smallboy’s first court appearance Friday at Prince Albert Provincial Court, comes just over 24 hours after a fire destroyed a home in the 200 block of 15th St. W.

A 36-year-old woman had exited the burning residence and was assessed by Parkland Ambulance. A witness told paNOW they had observed a woman jumping out a window but this has not been confirmed.

At this stage of the court proceedings, the circumstances of the incident is unclear.

Standing with his arms in a rigid position, Smallboy appeared frail and confused. He was asked by Judge Schiefner if he understood the charge.

“This is my first time,” Smallboy replied, claiming when he asked police what he was being charged with, he did not get a straight answer.

Judge Schiefner then advised Smallboy a bail hearing would first be required to determine if he can be released.

Prior to leaving, Smallboy also expressed concern for his son.

“He took off on me,” he said.

A youth worker who was present in the courtroom then advised the teenage boy was at a youth detention facility in Saskatoon and had his own pending court matters.
