City council to discuss Steuart arena, adopt budget on Monday

Jan 31, 2025 | 4:15 PM

The future of one of the City of Prince Albert’s older arenas will be part of Monday’s executive council meeting as the city prepares for the oncoming of its new twin pad arena in several months.

Recommendations are on the table for the Dave G. Steuart Arena to be let out for expressions of interest from interested groups.

The Steuart Arena has been on staff radar for the last 14 years as needing significant repairs and in March of 2023, council approved no longer keeping it as an ice surface when the new Lake Country Co-op Leisure Centre opened.

Some local organizations and groups have shown interest in the future of the arena so on Monday, the council will be presented with an option to allow them to show their plans.

Prince Albert Minor Hockey said that they would prefer to be able to keep using the arena as some teams leave the city for rural rinks to practice.

The Exhibition Association also mentioned a desire to buy the building.

Just prior to the executive meeting, council will have a special meeting where they will vote on adopting the 2025 budget.

Some increases are significant, such as an anticipated extra $8 million in tax revenue but multiple unions in the city have resolved labour negotiations resulting in increases ranging from around 10 per cent or higher over the next few years.

That meeting starts at 3:30 pm
