Gordie Howe Hat Trick for Lodewyk as Raiders oust Pats

With six wins in their last seven games, the lone blemish in that record for the Prince Albert Raiders was a 3-2 loss in a shootout on Saturday against the Regina Pats. The Raiders controlled most of the rematch on Wednesday night, earning a 5-2 win to extend their point streak to eight games.

The Raiders got the game’s first goal on the rush when Matteo Fabrizi sent a hard pass ahead to centre for Brayden Dube. He cut to the right side and sent a pass to the middle for Harrison Lodewyk who got a shot away, and Dube cleaned up the rebound for his 22nd of the year at 13:34.

In the final five minutes of the period, Lodewyk got involved in a play with Pats defenceman John Babcock. The two dropped the gloves as the play entered the Raiders side of the ice, and Lodewyk rushed forward with punches to tackle Babcock down to the ice for the second check on the Gordie Howe Hat Trick.

Early in the second period, Pats defencemen Reese Hamilton high sticked one of the Raiders forwards in the corner, and Linden Burrett stepped up to defend his teammate. Burrett traded off between throwing left hands and right hands in a long, spirited fight, and he’d get the crowd fired up as he went to the box.

The Raiders extended their lead at the 9:56 mark of the second period when Fabrizi started the play out of his own zone with a stretch pass, finding Riley Boychuk in the middle of the Pats blueline behind their defencemen. Boychuk didn’t have the speed built up to stay ahead, but he found and open Ty Meunier down the left wing who ripped a wrist shot under the bar to score his 10th of the season and destroy the goaltender’s water bottle.

Under a minute later at 10:36, the Raiders started the play in their own zone when Dube sent a puck out of the zone up the right wall for Niall Crocker on the rush, and Crocker put a pass into the middle for Lodewyk streaking in, scoring his first goal since his return from injury, his seventh of the season, and the finale to his Gordie Howe Hat Trick.

The Pats would find a leg to stand on shortly after at 12:48. After a shot from the point was blocked, Cohen Klassen would find the loose puck to the left of the goal and fire around a screen to hit the top corner and get the Pats on the board.

Then at 14:01, the Pats got to within one on the powerplay. This time on the right side, Keets Fawcett closed in from the right side point and used a Raiders defender as a screen before picking the top right corner around the screen.

After 2: Raiders 3 – 2 Pats, shots 12-11 Pats, 27-25 Raiders overall

The Raiders would get another goal started off the rush at the 6:25 mark of the third. After a onetimer from Justice Christensen was stopped, a pile formed in front of the net and Oli Chenier found the puck outside the left corner. He sent a hard pass to the front of the net, and Evan Smith tipped it in for his second of the season and his first as a Raider.

The Raiders would add one more at the 17:32 mark to put this one on ice. Working together, Rilen Kovacevic and Aiden Oiring stopped the Pats from carrying the puck over the Raider blueline, and Kovacevic kicked the puck ahead for Oiring to start a 3-on-1. Oiring sent the puck right to Tomas Mrsic, and he stared down the goaltender before finding Oiring backdoor for Oiring’s 20th of the year.

FINAL: Raiders 5 – 2 Pats, shots 10-8 Raiders, 37-33 Pats

The Raiders will play their next game at home when they play host to the Wenatchee Wild on Saturday.
